Intrinsic correlation and balance optimization between edge compression strength and bursting strength of Corrugated Box

Publish Time: 2024-11-15
Corrugated Box occupies an extremely important position in the packaging industry. Its edge compression strength and bursting strength are key indicators for measuring the quality and performance of cartons. There is a close and complex internal relationship between the two.

First of all, from the perspective of the structural composition of the carton, the edge compression strength mainly depends on the flute structure of the corrugated board and the thickness and material of the board. Factors such as the shape, height and spacing of the corrugated board affect the resistance of the carton when it is subjected to pressure parallel to the box surface. For example, a larger flute height and a suitable flute type (such as C-type flute) can improve the edge compression strength to a certain extent. The bursting strength is closely related to the fiber strength of the cardboard, the grammage of the paper, and the number of layers of the cardboard. High-quality fiber raw materials and sufficient paper thickness help to improve the bursting strength, because when subjected to pressure perpendicular to the box surface, the overall structural integrity of the cardboard and the toughness of the fiber are required to resist external forces. This means that to a certain extent, improving the material quality of the cardboard has a positive effect on both edge compression strength and bursting strength, but the focus is different.

Secondly, in terms of production technology, the two are also interrelated. For example, if the bonding process of the cardboard is not good, it will affect the edge compression strength, because when subjected to edge pressure, the bonding between the corrugated paper and the face paper and the inner paper is prone to delamination, resulting in a decrease in strength. Similarly, for bursting strength, if the bonding is not strong, the internal structure of the cardboard is easily destroyed when subjected to high pressure, and the stress cannot be effectively dispersed. In addition, factors such as temperature and humidity control during the processing of the cardboard will also act on the edge compression and bursting strength at the same time. Excessive temperature may cause the paper fibers to become brittle and reduce the bursting strength. It may also affect the molding quality of the corrugated paper, thereby weakening the edge compression strength.

Furthermore, from the analysis of actual application scenarios, different products have different requirements for the edge compression strength and bursting strength of Corrugated Box. For some heavier products that need to be stacked for storage and transportation, such as books, building materials, etc., the requirements for edge compression strength are more prominent, because the cartons need to withstand greater pressure without deformation when stacked. For some fragile products or products with high pressure inside, such as glass products, bottled beverages, etc., bursting strength is crucial to prevent the cartons from breaking when squeezed by external forces or when the internal pressure changes. Therefore, when designing cartons, it is necessary to balance these two strengths according to the characteristics of the product.

Finally, in order to achieve the balance and optimization of edge pressure strength and bursting strength, we can start from material selection, structural design and process improvement. In terms of materials, choose the appropriate paper weight and fiber type, and match the reasonable corrugated flute type; in structural design, determine the size ratio and number of layers of the carton according to product weight, size and transportation conditions; in process, accurately control the bonding process parameters, temperature and humidity. Through comprehensive consideration and continuous experimental adjustment, the Corrugated Box achieves the best balance between edge pressure strength and bursting strength, which not only meets the product packaging needs, but also reduces costs, improves resource utilization, and enhances the competitiveness of the Corrugated Box in the market.
